The Visit

Mac O'Roni

Sorry I'm so late,
But I've been out walking,
Trying to find a way to tell you
What I think you already know.

“Hey, darlin’. Miss me?” he asked, grinning that lopsided grin that he knew would never fool Remy. No, those demon’s eyes could always see right through any attempt he made to cover himself. The dozen red roses he’d brought weren’t going to set anything right here today. Might as well just bite the bullet and say what he had to say.

I'd never want to hurt you,
‘Cause, darlin’, I still love you.
But things aren't like they used to be.
It's time for letting go.

“Listen, Rems—I’m sorry. I know I promised you I’d love you forever, an’ I’d never give my heart to anyone else, but…well, you know as well as I do, things just ain’t right between us anymore. I can’t live like this, an’ I really don’t think you want me to. Am I right?

I wasn't out there looking,
But a month ago last Sunday,
I met someone just like you
In line at the grocery store.

“Anyway, I met this girl. Yeah, I know; the original switch-hitter, I guess. Unless maybe that’s you; I dunno. Whatever. She’s from Louisiana, too; some little bayou town down there. You’d like her: she’s got a loud mouth and a nasty temper, just like someone else I know.

And we've been spending time together.
Yeah, she knows all about you.
The truth is she can give me
What you can't anymore.

“Well, you know how it goes. One thing lead to another, and next thing you know, I’m askin’ her out on a date and damned if I didn’t have a good time.

Lookin' back when we first started,
I never thought I'd see this day.
If only I could write the pages,
Our story wouldn't end this way.

“We been goin’out for awhile now, an’ things are gettin’ pretty serious. Ain’t done it yet, but I’m kinda thinkin’ maybe…well, maybe she’s the one. I wanna ask her to marry me, but I knew I had to square things with you, first. Ah, hell—you probably already know all about it, you always were a step or two ahead of everybody else. I should have told you before but I guess I was kinda scared to.

I feel so much better
Knowing we could have this moment,
But it looks like it may rain soon,
And it's getting kind of late.

I'll always bring your roses
Each time I come to visit.
The caretaker's waving;
He wants to close the gates.

“I still love you, darlin’, an’ I guess I always will. You gave me somethin’ I can never pay back. I wish things had worked out different between us but I can’t change what happened, much as I’d like to.”
He lay the dozen red roses down before the tombstone on which Remy’s name was inscribed. “I’ll see you later, Cajun,” he said, standing up. “Wait up for me, okay?”

Lookin' back when we first started,
I never thought I'd see this day.
If only I could write the pages,
Our story wouldn't end this way.

If only I could write the pages,
Our story wouldn't end this way.
